Ineffective Encouragement from Deloitte
October 7, 2008Weeks after knowing I’ve been rejected, Deloitte FINALLY decides to officially notify me (and hundreds of other applicants) by sending me a rejection letter. Gee thanks.

“The selection process is always difficult as there are a large number of talented individuals with diverse backgrounds participating in recruiting. We believe; however, that you have the qualities to be successful in our profession…”
Might I say, they are an evil bunch. I have the “qualities to be successful in the profession”!?!?!? Am I to honestly believe that statement applies when it’s coming from this generic, automated rejection letter? What if another applicant had a C+ average in their ICAO courses? They wouldn’t be eligible for the CA designation (B- needed), are probably unsuited for accounting, and Deloitte would’ve rejected them. But then they get this rejection letter telling them they can be successful in the profession? It’d be a shame if they continued their job search for a CA student position when it’s destined for failure based on these “words of encouragement”.
Actually I’m kind of curious about that – I wonder if they actually *WOULD* send out a rejection letter like that to someone who is, to put it colloquially, ‘grossly under qualified’?
Every firm’s HR department has a different policy. I should check to see what DT does about that – though it might be faster for you to find a buddy with a C+ average to see what they say…
Hello! I found your blog through Krupo’s site.
Actually, I’m watching Last One Standing too, but only to ep 2…
Anyway, I was in the same position as you a few years ago, it really was depressing when all my friends got offers from the big firms, while I had a couple of interviews but nothing came of them. I trashed all those rejection letters, I sometimes wish they wouldn’t write all that “fluffy” stuff, seen as though no one really takes any comfort in them…
I was in your position about a year ago. Don’t worry, a lot of people go through stuff like this. Things will get better.
I actually got my first interview through a family friend. His son played hockey on the same team as another kid, who’s dad was the coach/partner at a firm. Most people I know got their jobs through weird connections like that. So don’t get discouraged if you don’t end up at a big firm.
Everybody’s comments are all very comforting. Thank you Krupo, kat and bdirenfeld.
Krupo –
I don’t think I know anybody with a C+ average who applied to big 4. I guess most in that position would know they wouldn’t cut it anyways.

Depression…not to mention jealousy, anger, self-pity and a bit of fear mixed in?
bdirenfeld –
Crazy connections crazy connections. I know my father actually has a friend in Hong Kong who is a partner at PwC. But I’m not at THAT stage yet.
Totally mine all your connections, no matter how esoteric. I had a bunch I didn’t end up using, I realize in hindsight, but no sense in idling.
Of course, local connections are tops. Go for those first.
I’m sure someone with a C+ was crazy enough to try. I guess it’s a good thing you don’t associate with people that crazy.
I actually have a friend who applied to 20+ firms with his Cs, and he got rejected by all of them. He did get the same rejection email from Deloitte.
Mystery solved, thanks for the info
don’t worry – rejection letters suck but everything happens for a reason. i was so upset when i got my first rejection letter – but i eventually got a job at the big 4 so hang in there!
I got the exact same letter from Deloitte last year and this was sent about 2weeks after the recruitment process. You would have thought they could have been much more efficient to tell people they didn’t get it…although i did revenge on them though, they offered me a position this year and i rejected them in favour for another firm
